Unter den bahnbrechenden Kunstströmungen der 1950er- und 1960er-Jahre wurde der Op Art bislang die geringste Aufmerksamkeit zuteil. Man hat sie häufig als zu spektakulär und daher als oberflächlich deklassiert. Zu Unrecht, denn die Op Art schärft das Bewusstsein für die Ambivalenz der Wirklichkeit und führt buchstäblich vor Augen, dass die Wahrnehmung nicht objektiv ist, sondern einfach zu destabi-lisieren und zu täuschen. Sie ist vom Standpunkt der jeweiligen Betrachter_innen abhängig—mit allen erkenntnistheoretischen Konsequenzen.

Vertigo
Op Art und eine Geschichte des Schwindels 1520—1970

Die Ausstellung Vertigo. Op Art und eine Geschichte des Schwindels 1520—1970 eröffnet ein Vexierspiel der Sinne, das von Tafelbildern, Reliefs und (kinetischen) Objekten über installative Arbeiten und Erfahrungsräume bis hin zu Film und computer- generierter bzw. -gesteuerter Kunst ein breites Spektrum an künstlerischen Arbeiten umfasst.

Fur den Ausstellungstitel stand Alfred Hitchcocks berühmter Film aus dem Jahr 1958 Pate. Wie die Ausstellung operierte der Film mit der Doppeldeutigkeit des Begriffs Vertigo/Schwindel als physischem Phänomen sowie sinnlicher und kognitiver Täuschung. Die Hauptfigur „Scottie“ leidet an Höhenangst und Schwindelgefühlen, was dazu führt, dass man sie auch auf inhaltlicher Ebene „be-schwindeln“ kann. Legendär ist die als „Vertigo-Effekt“ in die Filmgeschichte eingegangene Kameraführung, die bei der Schlüsselszene auf der Treppe im Turm den Blick in den Abgrund als spektakulär destabilisierende, spiralförmige Sogwirkung inszeniert. Nicht nur bei der Filmfigur löst diese Sequenz physische Reaktionen aus, sondern auch bei den Zuseher_ innen. Ebenfalls legendär wurde der Vorspann zum Film mit seiner Totalen auf ein Auge, in dem sich eine Spirale zu drehen beginnt, die schließlich in ein abstraktes Spiel unendlich anmutender Spiralbewegungen übergeht. Der Vorspann stammt von dem Designer Saul Bass sowie dem Animationskünstler James Whitney, einem Pionier des abstrakten Films und der Animationstechnik, der auch in der Ausstellung vertreten ist.

Werke der Op Art richten sich keineswegs nur an den Sehsinn, sondern vermitteln Erfahrungen, die den gesamten Körper affizieren. Nicht von ungefähr betitelt Bridget Riley, ihre Bilder mit Begriffen wie Blaze, Static, Cateract, Hesitate oder Climax, Bezeichnungen für extreme physische Erfahrungen. Tony Conrad wiederum, setzte die Betrachter_innen seines Flickerfilms der Gefahr epileptischer Anfälle aus. Um die intendierten Wirkungen herbeizuführen, verlangen die Op Art und ihr verbundene Formen kinetischer Kunst zudem die Bewegung der Betrachter_innen vor dem Werk, beziehungsweise in Relation zu diesem.

Eine theoretische Fundierung findet dieser Ansatz unter anderem bei Umberto Eco, der in seinem Buch Opera Aperta (1962) die Betrachter_innen als aktive Teilneh-mer_innen an der Konstituierung der Werke—ja sogar als notwendige Bedingung für deren Vollendung—erkannte. Mit dieser Überlegung sollte Eco als Denker sowie die Op Art als künstlerische Bewegung zu frühen Protagonisten der partizipa- tiven Kunst der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts wie des postmodernen Denkens überhaupt werden. Bezeichnenderweise wird Umberto Eco mit seinem ebenfalls 1962 erschienenen Text Arte programmata auch zu einem frühen Theoretiker der Op Art.

Formal betrachtet sind die überwiegend mit geometrischem Vokabular operierenden Werke der Op Art Teil der, das 20. Jahrhundert durchziehenden, Tradition abstrakt-kon- kreter Kunst, zu der auch die in den 1960er-Jahren (und damit zeitlich später) auf den Plan tretende Minimal Art zählt. Von dieser unterscheiden sie sich aber durch ihr prononciertes Verlassen der Komfortzone des harmonischen Maßes zugunsten heftiger Effekte, Verzerrungen und anderer Formen sensorischer Überforderung.

Die Op Art ist somit dem Prinzip des Anti-Klassischen verpflichtet, weswegen die Aus- stellungskurator_innen sie als Manierismus der konkreten Kunst begreifen. In diesem Sinne werden anhand präzise ausgewählter Referenzwerke Bezüge zu Beispielen antiklassischer Kunst des 16. bis 18. Jahrhunderts hergestellt sowie zu Vorläuferpositi- onen in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts. Diese veranschaulichen, dass sich die Auseinandersetzung mit vibrierenden Mustern, pulsierenden, flüchtigen Nachbildern, paradoxen Raumillusionen, Anamorphosen, Moiré- und Umspringeffekten ebenso wie andere Methoden optischer Täuschung, aber auch körperlicher Affizierung bereits in früheren Epochen jeweils als Gegenpole zu Konzepten einer „Klassik“ finden.

Das Ausstellungsdisplay in Form eines Labyrinths, ein im Manierismus, aber auch in der Op Art wiederholt verwendeter Topos, greift das Spiel der Täuschungen und Sinnesverwirrungen auf.

Die Ausstellung wurde vom mumok initiiert und wird in Kooperation mit dem Kunst- museum Stuttgart realisiert, wo sie Ende 2019 gezeigt wird. Vertigo. Op Art und eine Geschichte des Schwindels 1520—1970 wird von der Art Mentor Foundation Lucerne großzügig unterstützt.

Dorit Margreiters künstlerisches Interesse gilt den Verbindungen von visuellen Systemen und räumlichen Strukturen sowie den daraus resultierenden Konsequenzen für unseren gesellschaftlichen Alltag. Im Mittelpunkt ihrer Auseinandersetzung stehen moderne und zeitgenössische Architekturen sowie Formen medialer Repräsentation. Für ihre Personale im mumok verwandelt Dorit Margreiter den kompletten Ausstellungsraum in eine künstlerische Installation, die Display- und Architekturkomponenten, Filme und Mobiles sowie Fotografien einbezieht.

Zentrales Element ist eine neue filmische Arbeit, die im Spiegelkabinett im Wiener Prater gedreht wurde. In dieser labyrinthischen Architektur aus Glas und reflektierenden Oberflächen wird der Blick gezielt gebrochen, verzerrt, multipliziert und verunklärt. Die Differenzen zwischen den physischen und visuellen Grundlagen der Orientierung werden daher in Margreiters Film ebenso thematisiert wie die materiellen und imaginären Komponenten filmischer Repräsentation. Sowohl diese neue Arbeit als auch weitere filmische, fotografische und skulpturale Werke Margreiters, die Teil der Gesamtinstallation sind, beziehen sich auf den Ort der Schau, d.h. auf das Museum. So stellt beispielsweise ein neues, aus Spiegelelementen gebildetes Mobile den Präsentationsraum und das darin herrschende Verhältnis von Visualität und Materialität ebenso zur Diskussion, wie eine Sammlung fotografischer Tableaus, die Abbildungen des Materials Glas zeigen.

FIND YOURSELF: CARNIVAL AND RESISTANCE

Situated in a fifteenth-century monastery in the heart of Venice, Antigua and Barbuda’s National Pavilion celebrates Carnival. For this island nation, the development of the religious tradition of Carnival into an act of resistance remains true in modern festivals. With the pageantry of costumes, parades, resolute songs, and dances, Carnival has been the manifestation of defiance from its inception as a slavery and post-abolition phenomenon to the present day.

A carnivalesque world is flexible. Though rooted in faith, it accommodates shifting identities, which leads to introspection. Find Yourself is an exploration of Carnival in Antigua and Barbuda that expands into diverse locations such as Venice, New Orleans, Notting Hill, and even Russia. This National Pavilion is a global study of identity through expression or repression of ritual. The international migration of symbols of freedom of expression and treasure highlight the unique history and similarities among people from many continents.
Portraits of Antiguans and Barbudans—a people of unique beauty and power—line the gallery walls to illustrate daily life, weddings, funerals, and Carnival. The photographic exhibition is enlivened by videos of celebrations, rituals, music, calypsos (protest songs), and dances, with towering mannequins clad in modern-day Carnival dress as a contemporary personification of strength.
Resplendent in headdress, jewelry, and textiles, the costumes portray determination and resilience. They honour the small island nation’s resolve to transform art forms. The intangible cultural heritage and collective arts of sculptors, tailors, seamstresses, wire benders, mask makers, mask designers, and seed and bead workers maintain their innate dignity and are reminiscent of their African, European, and American origins.
Forward looking, yet comprehensive in understanding its history, Antigua and Barbuda’s Carnival expresses political will and the sovereignty of a soul, and stands as a microcosm of the world’s vulnerabilities. Woven into the exhibition in its stance against cultural and human exploitation is a message to challenge modern-day slavery and environmental inequality. As these threats are equally dangerous across the globe, visitors are invited to contemplate their respective societies within the Pavilion and to find meaning in their own national forms of cultural expression.

We, Elsewhere, a new work by Inci Eviner
The Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (IKSV) is delighted to present We, Elsewhere at Pavilion of Turkey at the 58th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia.

We, Elsewhere
‘We, Elsewhere’ is a site-specific installation with reconfigured objects, drawings, video, sound, and performance. İnci Eviner investigates the spaces that we create, and are created for us as a result of collective displacement. The exhibition thinks about how subjects who find themselves in these spaces react and interact with one another and with their memories. Various sound elements, reconfigured objects and characters will evoke the sense of a search for the missing, the erased and that which is elsewhere. The video will include the performance artists and dancers Canan Yücel Pekiçten, Melih Kıraç and Gülden Arsal.

In the Sale d’Armi, the visitors are invited to walk along the ramps, courtyards and edges. The pavilion will display permeability and allow views through cuts and cracks along the walls. The paths punctuated by the objects suggest the way in which memory eases conflicts. Together, the characters, the space and the paths tell a story akin to Hannah Arendt’s narrative of struggles in ‘We Refugees’.

İnci Eviner

İnci Eviner
The art works of İnci Eviner (°1956, Turkey) range from drawings and video to performative and collaborative practices. Her multi-layered pieces originate from drawings and explore the politics and potentiality of desire, space and subjectivity.

She received several prizes from the Sharjah Art Biennial in 2017 and was an artist in residence at Rauschenberg Foundation in Florida, Headlands Center for the Arts in California, SAM Art Projects in Paris and MAC/VAL Paris. Her works were displayed in important solo exhibitions such as ‘Beneath the Horizon’ at Galeri Nev Istanbul (2017), ‘Who’s Inside You?’ at Istanbul Museum of Modern Art (2016) or ‘Runaway Girls’ at The Drawing Center New York (2015). İnci Eviner attended a number of biennials worldwide including the Liverpool Biennial (2018), Gwangju Biennial (2018) and 13th Istanbul Biennial (2013). She is also a lecturer at Kadir Has University, Faculty of Art and Design.

“These figures are constantly changing places through the space to find their other halves. This effort is actually an attempt to reclaim their interrupted and invalidated memory and bodies. In doing so, mythologies and memories, the habits of everyday life, their joy and sorrow need to be picked up one by one and put into place. I try to keep myself in and out of events to witness all of this. The responsibility of being a witness is in the questioning of ‘being us’.”

Zeynep Öz
Zeynep Öz is currently curating the BACA Award exhibition of Marwan Rechmaoui at the Bonnefantenmuseum. She was one of the interlocutors of the Sharjah Biennial 13, curating the biennial’s off-site project in Istanbul in 2017, as well as co-curator of the Aichi Triennale 3 in 2016. Zeynep Öz was the co-founder and director of the Spot Production Fund from 2011 to 2017, during which she curated the Produce series (I, II, III). She has been on the curricular and selection committees of Home Workspace Programme of Ashkal Alwan in Beirut since 2015.

We, Elsewhere by İnci Eviner makes use of elements such as reconfigured objects as well as drawings, video, sound, performance, and it’s an investigation into the spaces that we create, and are created for us as a result of collective displacement. The exhibition reflects on how subjects who find themselves in these spaces react and interact with one another and with their memories. Sounds, reconfigured and amorphous characters crafted by Eviner are in search for something missing, something erased and something which is elsewhere. The space itself will be created as an architectural platform, through which visitors are invited to walk crossing ramps, courtyards and edges, allowing views through cuts and cracks in the walls. Together, the characters, the space, atmosphere and paths tell a story akin to Hannah Arendt’s narrative of struggles in We Refugees.

LIVE PERFORMACES
During the preview days of Biennale Arte 2019, the Pavilion of Turkey will host Space Occupiers, live performances by the Canan Yücel Pekiçten and Melih Kıraç, the performers of Inci Eviner’s work We, Elsewhere. Space Occupiers will be like the habitants of We, Elsewhere between 7-10 May, throughout the days, inside the Pavilion of Turkey.

Curated by Ziba Ardalan, Founder, Artistic and Executive Director of Parasol unit, London, THE SPARK IS YOU: Parasol unit in Venice exhibition has at its heart the need to develop mutual respect and understanding between different nations and cultures. Fittingly, this exhibition coincides with the 200th anniversary of West-oestlicher Divan (West-Eastern Divan), 1819, a book of lyrical poems written by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in homage to the fourteenth-century Persian poet Hafez.

The nine artists, all of whose vision looks beyond the ordinary, were selected for the affinity with openness, respect and human interconnectedness that is evinced in their work. Stemming directly
from a long and magnificent tradition of Persian poetry, this philosophy of life is a fundamental element of the Iranian/Persian character. Dialogues open up across the exhibition, not only between the different generations of artists and the geographical regions from which they now draw inspiration, but also through a common desire to interact openly and respectfully with
others. And, just as Goethe through his poetry sought to bridge East and West, these artists too seek to communicate mutually across all borders.

THE SPARK IS YOU: Parasol unit in Venice exhibition of paintings, sculptures, installations, multi-media and film brings together Iranian artists of different ages, who now live and work either in or outside of Iran. Having had a similar early education and grounding in classical Persian poetry they have all benefited from thought processes that are rooted in concepts such as the use of metaphor, openness, dialogue and figurative thinking. Shown together, their works create a sense of exchange that is felt in many ways across and beyond the exhibition, not only between the art works but also in the desire of the artists to communicate with thinkers from other cultures, and finally between art and music.

Venice, with its renowned history of being central to so many connections between East and West, is an ideal setting for THE SPARK IS YOU exhibition. Presented at the Conservatorio di Musica in Venice, visual art and music interact harmoniously, a reminder that different art forms are all part of a single discourse. Each artist presents their work in a separate room or an outdoor courtyard, which allows ample mental space for viewers to reflect on the exhibition and create their own dialogue with and between the works.

THE SPARK IS YOU: Parasol unit in Venice exhibition highlights the vital importance of open dialogue in the development of greater understanding between all nations. Particularly in the tumultuous and uncertain times of today, this exhibition is timely and informative in ways that we hope will further engender curiosity, understanding and appreciation of other cultures and stimulate more conversations

Catalogue: A publication with essays by Oliver Basciano, Narguess Farzad, Maryam Monalisa Gharavi, Mahan Moalemi, Maria Porges, Sarah Thomas and John Yau, will accompany the exhibition – available in June 2019.

The Navy Officer’s Club
The Navy Officer’s Club is a unique venue, which was first used for cultural events by Lightbox in 2015. It is strategically located around the corner from the entrance of the Arsenale (Biennale’s main entrance) on Fondamenta Arsenale, Castello 2168.

The Club is divided into different rooms which develop into a labyrinth that leads the guest to its most magical area: the garden. In addition to the exhibition spaces, members are able to attend conferences and talks. The Club also boasts a bar and restaurant. In the garden we also host breakfasts and cocktails.

Established in 2015, the Venice Meeting Point is a platform created by Lightbox for international dialogue in contemporary art, with the aim to foster collaboration opportunities between visual artists, art organisations and the international arts community, as well as cultivate deeper public engagement with the arts. The Venice Meeting Point, just round the corner from the Arsenale entrance, is a private club, the Navy Officer’s Private Club, which exceptionally only for the 4 days of the Biennale openings, welcomes also My Art Guides friends and partners. The Club has a restaurant, a beautiful courtyard, a conference room, a screening room, a bar and a large lounge area.

Field Hospital X (FHX) is a new, mobile, international institution, established by artist Aya Ben Ron. It is a unique organization that is committed to researching the way art can react and act in the face of social ills and corrupt values in society. Learning from the structure and practice of hospitals, health maintenance organizations and healing resorts, FHX provides a space in which silenced voices can be heard and social injustices can be seen.
FHX has been conceived with the intention to create a safe space to screen No Body, a video by Aya Ben Ron about abuse in the family that tells her story after many years of silence. Ben Ron wanted to create a place where people would see and listen to her story, as well as to other stories
that need to be heard.
When visitors enter FHX they take a queue number and wait in the Reception Area to be called. While waiting they watch the FHX TV Program – a video work by Ben Ron that gives information about the hospital’s ideology, its Care-Areas and Care-Kits.

Once their number is called, visitors continue to the Care-Areas and FHX facilities: Safe-Units in which they can learn how to produce a Sel Contained Shout; and Care-Chairs – devices that consist of a personal screen and headphones, to create the necessary conditions for personal viewing of FHX Care-Kits

Each Care-Kit contains one video by an invited artist, telling a personal story and revealing a social injustice. In each Care-Kit, the video is followed by two Second-Opinions. Second-Opinions are short responses by experts coming from various fields of knowledge and backgrounds: philosophy,
law, medicine, psychoanalysis, education, and anthropology, among others. Through Second- Opinions, FHX visitors can open up to a new perspective, get more information and hear a different point of view about what they just saw.

FHX currently provides four Care-Kits including Aya Ben Ron’s video No Body. In addition to No Body, the Care-Kits include: Habit by an anonymous Palestinian artist is his personal resistance to the Israeli occupation; Block of Clay, by Roey Victoria Heifetz and Zohar Melinek-Ezra is a video
that confronts gender identity and alienation from the body; and Institutional Abduction, by Idit Avrahami is about the institutional abduction and forced disappearance of thousands of babies and young children from Yemenite, Mizrahi and Balkan immigrant families in Israel in the 1950’s.

Field Hospital X was established by artist Aya Ben Ron, who serves as its founder and director, and developed together with curator Avi Lubin and producer Miki Gov. It will be launched at the Israeli Pavilion at the 58th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, then it will travel to various sites around the world, and continue to develop and expand along the way. In future venues, FHX will support and produce additional Care-Kits with new participating local and international artists.

Aya Ben Ron – Founder, Director, Artist
Multidisciplinary artist. A professor at Haifa University and Hadassah Academic College, Jerusalem, Israel. Her work ranges from site specific projects and installations to moving-image, documentary and film, and includes collaborations with medical institutions and hospitals.

Avi Lubin – Curator
Curator and writer in the field of contemporary art. Curator of Hamidrasha Gallery – Hayarkon 19 and founding co-editor of Tohu Magazine – a trilingual online art publication (Hebrew, Arabic and English). Between 2014-2019 Lubin served as the head of theoretical studies of the Postgraduate Program of Fine Art at the Faculty of Arts – Hamidrasha, Beit Berl College.

Miki Gov – Producer
Producer of performing and visual arts. He has produced numerous events in the fields of music, dance, theatre, arts and television. Additionally, Gov has initiated, arranged and managed international tours of dance groups and musicians.

NO BODY

At the end of the visit to Field Hospital X, visitors receive a Support Wristband with the inscription “Here Anyone Can Live Free.” This is the closing sentence of No Body, a video by Aya Ben Ron about abuse in the family. This video prompted the establishment of Field Hospital X.
