The Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (IKSV) is delighted to present We, Elsewhere at Pavilion of Turkey at the 58th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia.
We, Elsewhere
‘We, Elsewhere’ is a site-specific installation with reconfigured objects, drawings, video, sound, and performance. İnci Eviner investigates the spaces that we create, and are created for us as a result of collective displacement. The exhibition thinks about how subjects who find themselves in these spaces react and interact with one another and with their memories. Various sound elements, reconfigured objects and characters will evoke the sense of a search for the missing, the erased and that which is elsewhere. The video will include the performance artists and dancers Canan Yücel Pekiçten, Melih Kıraç and Gülden Arsal.
In the Sale d’Armi, the visitors are invited to walk along the ramps, courtyards and edges. The pavilion will display permeability and allow views through cuts and cracks along the walls. The paths punctuated by the objects suggest the way in which memory eases conflicts. Together, the characters, the space and the paths tell a story akin to Hannah Arendt’s narrative of struggles in ‘We Refugees’.

İnci Eviner
The art works of İnci Eviner (°1956, Turkey) range from drawings and video to performative and collaborative practices. Her multi-layered pieces originate from drawings and explore the politics and potentiality of desire, space and subjectivity.
She received several prizes from the Sharjah Art Biennial in 2017 and was an artist in residence at Rauschenberg Foundation in Florida, Headlands Center for the Arts in California, SAM Art Projects in Paris and MAC/VAL Paris. Her works were displayed in important solo exhibitions such as ‘Beneath the Horizon’ at Galeri Nev Istanbul (2017), ‘Who’s Inside You?’ at Istanbul Museum of Modern Art (2016) or ‘Runaway Girls’ at The Drawing Center New York (2015). İnci Eviner attended a number of biennials worldwide including the Liverpool Biennial (2018), Gwangju Biennial (2018) and 13th Istanbul Biennial (2013). She is also a lecturer at Kadir Has University, Faculty of Art and Design.
“These figures are constantly changing places through the space to find their other halves. This effort is actually an attempt to reclaim their interrupted and invalidated memory and bodies. In doing so, mythologies and memories, the habits of everyday life, their joy and sorrow need to be picked up one by one and put into place. I try to keep myself in and out of events to witness all of this. The responsibility of being a witness is in the questioning of ‘being us’.”

Zeynep Öz
Zeynep Öz is currently curating the BACA Award exhibition of Marwan Rechmaoui at the Bonnefantenmuseum. She was one of the interlocutors of the Sharjah Biennial 13, curating the biennial’s off-site project in Istanbul in 2017, as well as co-curator of the Aichi Triennale 3 in 2016. Zeynep Öz was the co-founder and director of the Spot Production Fund from 2011 to 2017, during which she curated the Produce series (I, II, III). She has been on the curricular and selection committees of Home Workspace Programme of Ashkal Alwan in Beirut since 2015.
We, Elsewhere by İnci Eviner makes use of elements such as reconfigured objects as well as drawings, video, sound, performance, and it’s an investigation into the spaces that we create, and are created for us as a result of collective displacement. The exhibition reflects on how subjects who find themselves in these spaces react and interact with one another and with their memories. Sounds, reconfigured and amorphous characters crafted by Eviner are in search for something missing, something erased and something which is elsewhere. The space itself will be created as an architectural platform, through which visitors are invited to walk crossing ramps, courtyards and edges, allowing views through cuts and cracks in the walls. Together, the characters, the space, atmosphere and paths tell a story akin to Hannah Arendt’s narrative of struggles in We Refugees.
LIVE PERFORMACES
During the preview days of Biennale Arte 2019, the Pavilion of Turkey will host Space Occupiers, live performances by the Canan Yücel Pekiçten and Melih Kıraç, the performers of Inci Eviner’s work We, Elsewhere. Space Occupiers will be like the habitants of We, Elsewhere between 7-10 May, throughout the days, inside the Pavilion of Turkey.
