A Bonsai of My Dream – Works by Wong Cheng Pou

Artist Wong Cheng Pou has been selected as the representative to participate in
the 57th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia (Exhibits from Macao, China) organised by the Macao Museum of Art under the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao Special Administrative Region Government. Below is the creative concept of this exhibition named ‘A Bonsai of My Dream’ developed by the artist.

‘Let yourself possess a little bonsai, tiny verdant mountain embraced with water, enclosing your preceding life and the contemporary one….

The world is getting more and more complicated. Living in an over-crowded city, people may find it confused to squeeze themselves among the gaps. I am so lucky to have been living by the sea, and whenever I am free I would like to go somewhere high, sitting there doing nothing, just to gaze at the enchanting mountains from an elevated position, especially when there is a clear moon in the sky, the silvery shadows reflected by the calmness of the water are totally different from what they used to be in the day time – a frigid concrete jungle. Then I couldn’t help myself being infatuated with this unfathomable scenery, recalling my memories of the creatures in the Shan Hai Jing (The Classic of Mountains and Seas, probably compiled by c. 500 BC-200 BC, containing a wide range of elements about geography, mythology, witchcraft, popular customs, etc.), who take care the seas and mountains in an eccentric way.

Macao got the most densely concentrated churches in the world, we are famous because of it, and no one would give any doubt. For the past centuries, more local people tend to believe in Buddhism, but undoubtedly Catholicism still playing an influential role in this city. I studied in catholic schools since childhood. For me, the attires of the clergies are always attached with a sense of mystery, which match with the elements of my imaginary gods…’

The Catalan nomination at the Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale, by the artist Antoni Abad, curated by Mery Cuesta and Roc Parés
Catalonia will participate in the 57th Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale under the program, Eventi Collaterali, with a project by Antoni Abad and curated by Mery Cuesta and Roc Parés.
The project goes by the name of, ‘La città che non si vede’. The Ramon Llull Institute is producing the Catalan presence at the Venice Biennale, which begins on May 13th, 2017.
Antoni Abad proposes an interpretation in sensorial code of the urban space that is Venice. The artist will create the project, ‘La città che non si vede’ in collaboration with a local group of blind and visually impaired people. This collective uses their senses in a different way than the majority of the population, who rely on full vision, and for whom the majority of urban spaces and IT app interfaces are designed. Internationally recognized for his work with digital communities, Abad, with the aid of this collective, reveals a different Venice; one that is not seen but heard, felt and experimented with. This is a Venice that breaks from the stereotypical vision of gondolas, bridges and palaces. Thus, the Catalan contribution to the 57th Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale offers up a paradoxical space: an exhibition dedicated to the senses – and more specifically, to all that cannot be seen – at a Biennale of visual arts.

Michael Werner Gallery presents James Lee Byars’s sculpture “The Golden Tower” in the Campo San Vio, Venice with the support of Fondazione Giuliani, Rome and the curation of Alberto Salvadori. Byars envisioned “The Golden Tower” as a colossal beacon and oracle that would bridge heaven and earth and unify humanity – a contemporary monument surpassing the grandeur of the Lighthouse of Alexandria. The idea of “The Golden Tower” first began in 1976 and was developed with numerous conceptual studies throughout the artist’s career. This presentation is an event of the LVII Venice Biennale and the first installation of “The Golden Tower” to fully realize the artist’s intentions of presenting the sculpture in a public space.
13 May – 26 November 2017.

The idea of “The Golden Tower” first began in 1976 and was developed with numerous conceptual studies throughout the artist’s career. The work was first exhibited in 1990 at the GegenwartEwigkeit exhibition at Martin-Gropius-Bau, Berlin and later in 2004 at the posthumous retrospective Life, Love and Death at the Schirn Kunsthalle, Frankfurt. Towering to a height of 20 meters, “The Golden Tower” is the artist’s largest and most ambitious work. The Venice installation of “The Golden Tower” is the first to fully realize the artist’s intentions of presenting the sculpture in a public space.
