FROM THE INSIDE TO THE OUTSIDE
Works by CAROLA DERTNIG, KRISTIN OPPENHEIM, ASHLEY HANS SCHEIRL, MARKUS SCHINWALD and MARTHA WILSON. They deal with the subject of “body and border transgression” – as an artistic tool and social phenomenon.
The exhibition “From the Inside to the Outside” brings together artists who deal with the body as a means of expression, platform, or tool of their artistic creation. The body does not only serve as a thematic basis of art, but furthermore as a stage and venue for transformative processes or experimental performances.
Performance art is often associated with border crossings. Taboos are broken, societal constraints are questioned, or political restrictions are shown. Methodically, however, another border is crossed: the one from the inside to the outside.
The body becomes a mirror of ideas, imaginations, and feelings. It indicates a border which, as this exhibition makes clear, can neither be clearly defined nor is it invariable. The body as a mirror of fluid identities is perceived as a changeable variable. Categories such as age or gender are questioned as well as beauty ideals or social conventions.
“From the Inside to the Outside” follows a path that begins in the bodilessness of our deepest inner being and at the end of which the body itself is designated as a work of art. From Kristin Oppenheim’s intangible sound installation to Martha Wilson’s art, which overrides the separation between the artist’s body and the work, there are various intermediate stops and branches that will be explored in this exhibition.

Werke von: CAROLA DERTNIG, KRISTIN OPPENHEIM, ASHLEY HANS SCHEIRL, MARKUS SCHINWALD und MARTHA WILSON. Sie befassen sich mit dem Thema “Körper und Grenzüberschreitung” – als künstlerisches Mittel und gesellschaftliches Phänomen.
Die Ausstellung „From the Inside to the Outside“ versammelt Künstlerinnen und Künstler, die sich mit dem Körper als Ausdrucksmittel, Sujet oder Werkzeug ihres künstlerischen Schaffens beschäftigen. Der Körper dient somit nicht nur als thematische Grundlage der Kunst, sondern auch als Bühne und Schauplatz transformativer Prozesse oder experimenteller Performances.
Performance-Kunst steht oft im Zusammenhang mit Grenzüberschreitungen. Tabus werden gebrochen, gesellschaftliche Zwänge hinterfragt oder politische Beschränkungen aufgezeigt. Methodisch wird dabei aber noch eine andere Grenze überschritten: Die Grenze zwischen Innen und Außen.
Der Körper wird zum Spiegel von Ideen, Vorstellungen und Gefühlen. Er zeigt eine Grenze an, die – wie diese Ausstellung verdeutlicht – weder klar definiert werden kann, noch unveränderlich ist. Der Körper als Spiegel fluider Identitäten wird als veränderliche Variable wahrgenommen. Kategorien wie Alter oder Geschlecht werden ebenso hinterfragt wie Schönheitsideale oder gesellschaftliche Konventionen.
„From the Inside to the Outside“ folgt einem Weg, der in der Körperlosigkeit unseres tiefsten Inneren beginnt und an dessen Ende der Körper selbst zum Kunstwerk ernannt wird. Von der immateriellen Sound-Installation Kristin Oppenheims bis hin zur Kunst Martha Wilsons, die die Trennung zwischen Künstlerkörper und Werk aufhebt, gibt es verschiedene Zwischenhalte und Abzweigungen, denen in dieser Ausstellung nachgegangen werden soll.

MARKUS SCHINWALD

In his interdisciplinary work, encompassing video, performance, dance, theatre, painting, photography, installation, and even puppetry, Markus Schinwald creates mysterious and unsettling atmospheres that hint at their Viennese production context, through references to austere Biedermeier style or to psychoanalysis.
MARTHA WILSON
Martha Wilson (b. 1947) is a pioneering feminist artist and gallery director, who over the past four decades created innovative photographic and video works that explore her female subjectivity through role-playing, costume transformations, and “invasions” of other people’s personae. She began making these videos and photo/text works in the early 1970s while in Halifax in Nova Scotia, and further developed her performative and video-based practice after moving in 1974 to New York City, embarking on a long career that would see her gain attention across the U.S. for her provocative appearances and works. In 1976 she also founded and continues to direct Franklin Furnace, an artist-run space that champions the exploration, promotion and preservation of artists’ books, installation art, video, onliine and performance art, further challenging institutional norms, the roles artists play within society, and expectations about what constitutes acceptable art mediums.
