Eran Shakine commisioned outdoor sculpture
The Girl from Buda” for Art Market Budapest.

The Girl from Buda is a 6-meter tall sculpture of a young girl installed in front of the Chain Bridge in the center of Budapest. It depicts the young girl walking toward the bridge. Is she coming back home from a night out in Pest?
Is she on a catwalk?

Throughout art history, artists tried to represent the female form as a canon of beauty, while in the more recent past, large figured sculptures were used as part of political strategy. Located on the point where domestic Buda meets the international Pest, where past is giving way to the future, this sculpture is a monument to everyday moments in the lives of young people living in the city.

The sculpture is the largest ever produced by Shakine. It will be dominantly displayed at one of Budapest’s most visible crossroads.

The Body is a Bag of Needs

creates a parallel between the restraints of society and the individual’s yearning for freedom and the sublime. Nave portrays exhausted and bleeding figures against the backdrop of the Israeli landscape. His subjects are confused intertwined bodies, eternally bound together in a mutual fate. Immersed in their flesh and blood, the figures are heavy. While they long for the sublime their earthly bodies trap them in the midst of a conflict where existential darkness meets metaphysical salvation.

“The Human Condition” – Psychological works from the Serge Tiroche Collection

This exciting collaboration with Art Market Budapest will feature selected works from START and Serge Tiroche’s private collections.

Titled “The Human Condition”, the exhibition focuses on psychological works by a dozen artists that bring to the fore the diversity and complexity of Israel’s contemporary art scene. Born in the 70’s and 80’s, these artists work in multiple mediums and practices, yet are all committed to map the complex fabric of Israeli society, reflective of their diverse origins and cultures. Their works both represent an aesthetic investigation on psychological phenomena and an intellectual approach of political and cultural issues. Either mirroring real life situations or turning everyday observations into absurd associations, the artworks speak of personal and universal problems at a deep, emotional level, with a regard on the visual iconography of their antecedents. Taken from Serge Tiroche’s collections, the seemingly disparate selection potently explores the collector’s interest in works that decipher, explore and untangle the Human Condition.

START was founded in 2008 in order assist artists, curators and collectors make their first steps in the art world, and to promote Israeli contemporary art internationally. Funded entirely by Serge Tiroche, the START collection amassed over 700 works by nearly 150 Israeli artists, working in all mediums. It is most probably the largest collection of Israeli Art from the new millennium.
