VARIATIONS – Kulturengeflechte

Following an in-depth investigation into post-war modern architecture, Fabian Patzak has now shifted his focus to the details: shapes and patterns. While continuing to incorporate impressions of architectural elements inspired by buildings in Western Europe and the US, the works in “Variations – Kulturengeflechte” make ample reference to historically non-Western patterns, and investigate the borders between what have, in modern history, been identified as cultural markers and separate contexts.

With a more finely developed and heightened use of color, and new physicality in application, the architectural references in this new body of work often interweave with and give way to more delicate textile patterns—a first in his work—a development that can be traced back to his concept of the grid as the basis for both architectural and woven works.

The drawings for Patzak’s new series manifest themselves as graph paper drafts in a dedicated notebook that the artist subsequently translates into oil paintings on canvas. The grid remains partially visible in each of the pieces, a conceptual and compositional element that weaves in and out of the final work and provides the basis for a degree of freedom during the painting process heretofore unseen in his earlier work. The resulting shapes and patterns reveal snippets of patterns and structures that distill moments from the artist’s everyday life—a Moroccan Boucherouite carpet, a decorative concrete screen wall in a public housing complex, or the façade of a modern skyscraper. He calls these works “Variations,” as they are variations on the original intentions and forms they reference.

In constant conversation with his own bicultural heritage, this body of work evidences that Patzak continues to grapple with the concepts of cultural heritage, intersections, amalgamations and, yes, chafing that have defined us both historically and today and which he interprets into painted images.

Fabian Patzak hat nach einer intensiven Auseinandersetzung mit moderner Nachkriegsarchitektur seinen Blick nun auf die Details gerichtet: Formen und Muster. Während er weiterhin architektonische Elemente, die in Gebäuden Westeuropas und den Vereinigten Staaten zu finden sind, in seine Arbeiten einbezieht, nehmen die neuen Arbeiten in „Variations – Kulturgeflechte“ einen besonderen Bezug auf historisch nicht-westliche Muster. Patzak untersucht die Grenzen zwischen dem was wir in der modernen Geschichte als kulturelle Chiffren sehen und dem wie wir diese in unterschiedlichen Kontexten klassifizieren.

Mit einer feiner ausgearbeiteten Farbanwendung und einer neuen Körperlichkeit beim Farbauftrag verflechten sich die architektonischen Verweise erstmals in seinen Arbeiten mit zarteren Textilmustern. Diese Entwicklung ergibt sich aus der Überlegung, dass das Raster als Grundlage für die Architektur sowie für die Weberei dient.

Die Zeichnungen für Patzaks neuer Serie entstehen als Bleistiftskizzen auf Millimeterpapier, welche der Künstler in weiterer Folge in Ölmalereien auf Leinwand überträgt. Das Raster bleibt in jedem seiner Werke teilweise sichtbar. Ein konzeptioneller und kompositorischer Bestandteil, der Teil seines malerischen Geflechts wird und die Grundlage für einen Freiheitsgrad während des Malprozesses bildet, der bisher unbekannt in seinen Arbeiten war. Die daraus resultierenden Strukturen offenbaren Ausschnitte von Formen und Mustern die Momentaufnahmen aus dem Alltag des Künstlers preisgeben: Ein marokkanischer Boucherouite-Teppich, eine dekorative Betonwand in einem Gemeindebau oder die Fassade eines modernen Wolkenkratzers. Er nennt diese Werke „Variations“. Variationen die auf den ursprünglichen Zweck und die ursprüngliche Form Bezug nehmen.

In einem anhaltenden Diskurs mit seiner eigenen bikulturellen Herkunft, zeigen diese neuen Werke, dass Patzak weiterhin mit Begriffen kultureller Herkunft, kultureller Überschneidungen, Vermengungen und Spannungen ringt, die uns aus unserer Geschichte bis in die Gegenwart prägen. Dieses Ringen begleitet den Entstehungsprozess der „Variations – Kulturgeflechte“.

Variation

FABIAN PATZAK is an Austrian American artist whose work has been exhibited internationally and is housed in both public and private collections. Patzak earned his Masters degree from the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Muntean/Rosenblum, and has held residencies in Santiago de Chile and New York City. In review of his solo exhibition Someplace Next Year, Patzak was named “one of the most outstanding representatives of a young generation of painters who demonstrate a strong affinity for spatial depictions.” In 2015 Patzak was awarded the Theodor Körner Prize for visual arts for his series Unugly Buildings.
