Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s works become major global events, drawing huge crowds, and sparking national debate and political interest. The Gates brought New York together in 2005 after it was approved by Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Wrapped Reichstag in 1995 was debated extensively by the German parliament. The most recent project Floating Piers drew 1.2 Million visitors over 16 days. The lecture will be a personal illustrated overview of his and Jeanne-Claude’s projects, including insight into the creative and technical challenges of creating such large-scale artworks.
Christo fled communist Bulgaria in 1956, and met his late wife Jeanne-Claude in Paris in 1958. By 1964 they were living and working in New York City, creating monumental works on a huge scale. Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s relationship with the UAE goes back to 1979 when they visited the then young country, and began what has been a longstanding friendship with the region.

Yasmina Reggad curates a series of site-specific performances as part of Art Dubai Commissions 2017. Artists include Manuel Pelmuş, Lana Fahmi, Eglė Budvytytė, Iván Argote and Pauline Bastard.
What Modernity? [working title] performs dance pieces and phrases that engage with Art Dubai Modern’s exhibited artworks in relation with the history of performative arts in the Arab world. Lana Fahmi approaches and takes advantage of the gallery hall to defeat the traditional setting and protocol of the theatrical space and duration when the audience sits down and lights are turned off for an agreed time.
