Christopher Chaplin – Je suis le Ténébreux
featuring Hans-Joachim Roedelius, Christine Martha Roedelius & Claudia Schumann
British composer and experimental music artist Christopher James Chaplin will hold his album release at TBA21–Augarten on January 28, presenting his first solo album “Je suis le Ténébreux”. His new LP features the voices of electronic music pioneer Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Christine Martha Roedelius, French actress and soprano Judith Chemla, Italian tenor Pino Costalunga and artist and poet Claudia Schumann.
Christopher Chaplin studied the piano with Irene Denereaz in Vevey (Switzerland) before moving to London in the early 80s. In 2009 he was invited by Viennese label Fabrique to collaborate with electronic musician Thomas Pötz aka Kava on “Seven Echoes”, an highly acclaimed album released in 2010 and presented live at the well-known Art Brut Museum Gugging in Austria. There he met Hans-Joachim Roedelius (Cluster, Harmonia) who later invited Christopher to take part in a “Late Junction” session for BBC Radio 3. The result of this amazing collaboration eventually led to the album “King of Hearts”, released in 2012.
In the following years Chaplin and Roedelius performed around the world; these were largely improvised performances with Roedelius on piano and electronics, and Chaplin on synthesizers and orchestral samples. Amongst others they captivated audiences in Paris (Silencio), Sao Paulo (Sesc Belenzinho), Barcelona (Primavera Festival), Vienna (Casino Baumgarten, Thyssen–Bornemisza Art Contemporary, Volkstheatre), Linz (Lentos Kunstmuseum), Lunz am See (More Ohr Less Festival), Tiradendes (Mimo Festival), Madeira (MMiFF Festival) or Berlin (Akademie der Kunste and Haus der Kulturen der Welt).
October 2016 saw the release of Christopher Chaplin’s solo album debut “Je suis le Ténébreux”, which has been partly recorded at Air’s Atlas Studio in Paris and various studios in the UK. It combines experimental musical influences around a sixteenth century text, an epitaph known as the “Enigma of Bologna”.
The video for the piece “Lucius Agatho“ – made out of 20 thousand images – has been created by Venezuelan visual artist Francisco Bassim. Christopher Chaplin “Francisco Bassim graciously accepted to create a video for the track “Lucius Agatho” from my album“Je suis le Ténébreux”. The result is more than I could have ever wished for. It entirely captures and enhances the essence of the piece. Thank you Francisco Bassim for putting in all the hours towards achieving an outstanding piece of artwork!”
