Graz ist seit 2001 erste europäische Stadt der Menschenrechte – das Filmfestival FRAGMENTS soll 2016 im Jubiläumsjahr der Stadt dieses Anliegen auf filmischer Ebene ergänzen, unterstützen und einer breiteren Öffentlichkeit zugänglich machen. Neben Filmen zu allgemeinen Themen der Menschenrechte wird der Fokus auf dem Thema Flucht & Krise liegen. Nationale und internationale Filmschaffende werden Gäste des Festivals sein, ebenso wie Betroffene und Experten zum Schwerpunktthema.

Fragen der Menschenrechte sind Themen, denen sich ständig mutige Filmemacher und Filmemacherinnen annehmen. Durch ihre Filme zeigen sie auf, wo politische Instanzen versagen, wo gesellschaftliche Veränderungen dringend notwendig sind – wo Menschenrechte nicht eingehalten oder gebrochen werden – oder gar nicht erst existieren – aber auch wo Menschenrechte durch das Engagement einzelner oder von Organisationen durchgesetzt werden konnten.

Die Filmkunst ist ein hervorragendes und bewährtes Medium, um auch komplexe Themen zu transportieren. Ziel ist es mit FRAGMENTS und den hier gezeigten Filmen ein Bewusstsein für Menschenrechte zu schaffen und zu schärfen.

Auf der inhaltlichen Ebene zentraler Kooperationspartner ist das ETC European Training Center for Human Rights Graz, das ein Rahmenprogramm zum Festival gestalten wird.

Die Idee und Konzeption des Festivals gehen auf Franz Grabner und Sarah Julia Stroß zurück.

Graz has been Europe’s first “City of Human Rights” since 2001. The film festival FRAGMENTS wants to contribute to and support this cause through the medium film and make this issue accessible to a broader audience. Besides films on general Human Rights topics, the focus will be on the issue of Flight & Crisis. National and international filmmakers as well as victims and experts on the focus topic will be guests of the festival.

Concerns of Human Rights are being covered by a number of brave filmmakers. Through their films, they shine light on issues where politics and policy failed, where societal change is desperately needed, where Human Rights are not being respected or violated – or where they do not even exist – but also where Human Rights have been enforced by dedicated individuals and organizations.

The art of film is an excellent and proven medium to transport even complex topics. It is the goal of FRAGMENTS and the presented films to create and sharpen the consciousness for Human Rights.
